What Shopify can and can't undo

Shopify has no undo button or version history for products. Once a change is saved, whether by hand, a bulk edit, a CSV import or an app, Shopify offers no earlier version to restore. What you can reverse depends on whether you archived instead of deleting, and whether you exported before the change.

This page covers products, variants, images, collections and stock. Theme files have their own version history in the code editor, which is outside the scope here.

The full table

Change Can Shopify undo it? How to reverse it without an app Guide

Saved edit to one product No Re-type the old values, or re-import from an export —
Bulk edit in Shopify's bulk editor No Run the inverse edit, or re-import changed columns from an export Undo a bulk edit
Bulk edit made in a bulk editor app In that app, usually Use the app's own undo, if it has one (e.g. Ablestar) Undo a bulk edit
CSV product import No; can't be cancelled once started Re-import a prior export with "Overwrite products with matching handles" Undo a CSV import
Archived product Yes Unarchive it, then set it back to active —
Draft or unpublished product Yes Change status or sales channels —
Deleted product No; irreversible per Shopify's API docs Rebuild from a prior export; it gets a new ID Restore a deleted product
Product removed from a manual collection No Add it back and re-sort by hand —
Manual collection sort order changed No Drag products back by hand —
Images deleted from a product No Re-upload from your own copies —
Metafields overwritten No Re-import (product metafields only; variant metafields aren't in CSVs) —
Stock levels changed No undo Adjustment history shows the changes; correct with an inventory CSV Undo a bulk edit
Changes by another app or a sync No Check the app for its own undo —

What a CSV export does and doesn't cover

The product CSV export is Shopify's only built-in backup for products, so its limits decide what you can recover:

  • Covered: title, handle, description, vendor, type, tags, status, options, variants, SKU, barcode, price, compare-at price, image URLs with position and alt text, SEO title and description, product metafields.
  • Not covered: collection membership (the export leaves out the Collection column), variant metafields, collection sort order, and stock for multi-location stores (use the separate inventory export).
  • Images are exported as image URLs, not files. Keep your own originals.

The no-app routine

This protects most stores with no extra cost:

  1. Before any import, bulk edit, or new app that writes to products, export all products.
  2. Multi-location stores: export inventory too.
  3. Archive instead of delete.
  4. Keep original images outside Shopify.
  5. Write down manual collection orders for collections you sort by hand.

To recover, re-import only the columns that broke, plus URL handle and Title, and Option1 name and Option1 value for variant columns (left-out columns are kept, blank cells overwrite). The limits: it also overwrites later good edits, it can't restore collections, and deleted products come back with new IDs.

How it works with Trailmark

Trailmark fills the gap Shopify leaves for products: it records a version of each product whenever it changes, from any source, and can put it back. It starts recording at install.

What it tracks: title, handle, description, vendor, type, status, tags, options, variants (SKU, price, compare-at price, barcode), images (its own copies, with alt text and order), product metafields, manual collection membership and position (not Shopify's mixed rule-and-manual collections), Online Store visibility, and stock per location.

What you can do with it:

  • Revert one product to any saved version from its timeline.
  • Restore a deleted product with its images, metafields, manual collections and position in manually sorted collections. It gets a new ID, as with any restore.
  • Revert many products to a date (paid plans), with a per-product preview first.
  • Get an alert in the app when a burst of edits touches about 10% of the catalog (10 to 50 products), and undo only that burst, keeping later edits. Edits made since are listed as conflicts you can override. Alerts and alert undo are on the free plan.
  • See stock alerts when many items drop to 0 or move by more than half, with before and after values and a CSV.
  • Undo your latest bulk revert or alert undo, and undo that undo. A single-product revert is undone by reverting to the earlier version in its timeline.

What it doesn't do:

  • Change stock. Stock is shown, never reverted.
  • Undo Online Store visibility in a bulk revert or alert undo. Restore it per product from the timeline.
  • Back up themes, pages, blogs, customers or orders. For those, see Rewind alternatives, which compares full-store backups too.
  • Recover changes from before install.
  • Send alerts by email or Slack yet.

Pre-change checklist

Use this before any import, bulk edit or app install that touches products:

  • Export all products, untouched.
  • Export inventory if you have more than one location.
  • Note manual collections and their sort order for affected products.
  • Test on 2–5 products first.
  • Include only the columns or fields you mean to change, plus the ones Shopify needs to match them (URL handle, Title, option columns).
  • Make sure no other app or staff member is editing the same products.
  • Archive, don't delete, unless you're sure.
  • After the change, spot-check products from the start, middle and end.

FAQ

Does Shopify have a version history for products?

No. Shopify offers no earlier version of a product to restore after you save. The admin activity log records some events, but it can't restore anything.

Can Shopify Support restore my products?

Don't rely on it. Shopify's API docs say deleted products can't be recovered, and Shopify asks you to back up before imports.

What's the safest way to remove products I might need later?

Archive them. Archived products are hidden from sales channels and can be unarchived at any time (they come back as drafts). Deleted products are gone.

Do bulk editor apps protect me from all bulk changes?

Usually not. An app's undo covers edits made through that app. CSV imports, Shopify's bulk editor and other apps aren't covered.

Is a CSV export a full backup?

No. It leaves out collection membership, collection sort order, variant metafields, image files, and multi-location stock.

When should I install a history app?

Before the change you'll want to undo. No app can recover changes it didn't record.
