Rewind alternatives for Shopify product undo

Rewind Backups is the established full-store backup for Shopify: it backs up products, themes, collections, customer data and more, and prices by monthly orders. If you mainly need to undo product changes, a product-history alternative priced by catalog size may fit better. If you need themes, customers and other store data backed up, Rewind or Talon still cover more.

All prices and features below are from Shopify App Store listings, checked October 2026. Listings change; check them before you choose.

First: what do you need to protect?

You need to recover from… Type of app
A theme edit, deleted page or blog post, customer data Full-store backup (Rewind, Talon)
A bad CSV import, bulk edit, app sync or deleted product Product history and revert
An edit made inside your bulk editor Your bulk editor's own undo (Hextom, Ablestar)

Shopify can roll back a theme code file one at a time (the code editor's Timeline view), but it can't undo the rest after saving. See what Shopify can and can't undo.

Before installing anything: the no-app option

You can protect products without an app if you're disciplined about it:

  1. Export all products as CSV before every import, bulk edit, or app install that writes to products.
  2. Export the inventory CSV too if you use more than one location.
  3. Keep your own copies of product images.
  4. Archive products instead of deleting them.

To recover, you re-import the relevant columns of the export. The gaps: the export has no collection membership and no variant metafields, re-importing overwrites later good edits, and deleted products come back with new IDs. Details in how to undo a CSV import.

Rewind Backups, as of 2026-10

From its App Store listing:

  • Plans: Backup + Restore, $19/month for up to 300 orders/month. Protection Suite, $99/month for up to 600 orders/month. 7-day free trial, no free plan.
  • Included: daily and real-time backups, bulk and individual restores, 365-day backup history, metafield backups, Klaviyo and Mailchimp backups.
  • Protection Suite adds: bulk product change alerts and a staging environment.
  • Rating: 4.3 from 631 reviews. Listed since January 2016.

Pricing follows order volume, so a store with a small catalog and many orders pays more than one with a large catalog and few orders. That's a good fit when what you're protecting grows with orders, like customer data. It's a weaker fit if your risk is mostly product edits.

What a product-level restore should bring back

When comparing, check the listing or ask support whether a restore covers:

  • Variants, prices, compare-at prices, SKUs, barcodes
  • Images, with alt text and order, even if the original image files are gone
  • Metafields
  • Manual collection membership and the position in manually sorted collections
  • Stock (and whether you want stock restored at all)

A restore that brings back the product but not its collections leaves it invisible on collection pages until someone notices.

How Trailmark compares

Trailmark is a product-history app. It doesn't back up themes, pages, blogs, customers or orders. If you need those, use a full-store backup.

What it does:

  • Mass-change alerts on the free plan. A burst of product edits touching about 10% of the catalog (10 to 50 products) raises an alert in the app, with an undo of that burst (preview, then confirm). Stock bursts (items set to 0 or moved by more than half) raise their own alert with before and after values and a CSV. Email and Slack delivery aren't available yet.
  • Undo one change, keep later edits. The alert undo puts back only the fields the burst changed. Fields edited again afterwards are kept and listed as conflicts, which you can override one by one (except variant and option changes). Online Store visibility isn't undone; restore it from the product's timeline.
  • Restore fidelity. A restored product comes back with variants, images from Trailmark's own copies (with alt text and order), product metafields, manual collection membership, and its position in manually sorted collections.
  • Preview before every revert, undo after. Each revert shows a preview first (up to 50 products listed), and your latest bulk revert can be undone. Bulk revert to a date is on paid plans.
  • Priced by product count, not orders.

What it doesn't do:

  • Stock is never restored. Stock history is shown per location, but reverts leave stock alone. Rollback's listing says it restores stock with deleted products; if you need that, it's a reason to pick Rollback.
  • No history before install. Like every history app, it starts recording when you install it.
  • Rule-based collections aren't written directly; membership follows from the restored fields (tags, type, vendor, price and so on).
  • Restored products get new IDs. Shopify's API has no way to create a product with a chosen ID, so this applies to every app.

Checklist for choosing a backup or history app

  • List what you'd actually need to recover: products only, or themes and customers too.
  • Check what the price is based on and what it costs at your order volume and catalog size a year from now.
  • Check the history length on the plan you'd pay for. Mistakes are often found weeks later.
  • Check whether alerts and bulk revert are on that plan or a higher one.
  • Test a restore on a draft product: delete it, restore it, compare images, metafields and collections.
  • Install before you need it. No app can restore changes from before install.

FAQ

Is there a free alternative to Rewind for Shopify?

For products, yes: Rollback, Catalog Undo, SO: Product History and Trailmark have free plans with product and history limits. None of them back up themes or customers. Rewind has a 7-day trial and no free plan, as of October 2026.

Does Rewind's price depend on my catalog size?

No. As of October 2026, Rewind's plans are set by orders per month (up to 300 on the $19 plan, up to 600 on the $99 plan). Many product-history apps price by product or variant count instead.

Can any app restore a deleted product with its original ID?

No. Shopify's API has no way to create a product with a chosen ID, so a restored product gets a new one.

Do I still need CSV exports if I use an app?

They're cheap insurance. Export before big imports anyway; it's your fallback if any tool fails.

Can I run Rewind and a product-history app together?

Yes. Each keeps its own copy of your data. You can use a full-store backup for themes and customers, and a product-history app for day-to-day product undo.
